On August 23, 2007, the IWHS Varsity volleyball team place 2nd after competing in their second tournament of the season against 5 teams, in two days, at Floresville High School in Floresville, Texas. The girls played on Thursday and Friday against high schools George West, Jourdanton, Burbank, Stephen’s, and Beeville.

Along with their coaches Nikki Gonzales and her sister Jaci Barrientes the girls knew they would succeed this time, because they knew their mistakes from the last tournament and knew what had to be done to get placed.

“We were more into the game and knew what needed to be done,” said Varsity player Jessica Cervera.

On Sunday, Katie Fleming and Madison Rivera were awarded a medal for the All Tournament Team, meaning they were picked as the girls who played best in the tournament out of all the teams.

“The tournament was competitive, but we did well because we improved on the little things that needed to be fixed, and did them well,” said Varsity player, Madison Rivera.

Even though the girls placed second, they continue to prepare each day to get better and better with their daily 6:30 A.M. practices. Even though their practices are intense, they are filled with more than just sweat.

“Every practice is a focused practice to show your dedication and mentality in game like situations,” and for our Coach practice is a time where “she tries to make each one of us the best we can be,” said Varsity player, Madison Rivera.

Not only does the coach try to encourage the girls, but Senior Captain Katie Fleming, tries to pump up the girls for the games, and also give them high expectations for the entire season.

“I think that we are a young and pretty new team, but have a great work ethic and the same goal in mind to win our district and then state championship,” said Varsity Captain Katie Fleming.
