Every August the year starts over for many students and teachers across the area; this is no different at Incarnate Word High School. It’s a new beginning for everyone, whether you’re a veteran or a new edition. In Incarnate Word tradition, it’s very important that we welcome these new faces as we walk the halls.

Meet the new English III teacher- Ms. Piña
One such new face is our new junior English teacher and Speech and Debate Club Moderator, Ms. Michelle Piña. The Star Newspaper sat down with Ms. Pina in order to get to know a little about this new shamrock.

The Star: Where are you joining us from this year?
Ms. Pina: I came from teaching 9th and 10th grade English at Antonian College Preparatory High School.

The Star: Oh really, Antonian. So how long have you been teaching?
Ms. Pina: I have been teaching for five years. Ninth grade English for four years and tenth grade for one.

The Star: Where did you graduate from high school and college?
Ms. Pina: I actually graduated from Providence High School, and I also have my Bachelor’s and Master’s in English Literature from St. Mary’s University.

The Star: So what made you decide to teach at Incarnate Word HS?
Ms. Pina: I felt it was time for a change. My first class that I taught at Antonian College Prep graduated so I thought it was time for something different. I also thought it would be interesting to teach at an all-girls school, seeing as it was familiar to me having gone to Providence.

The Star: Are you married?
Ms. Pina: Yes, I am married. I am having a wedding in October of this year. It’s actually a Pirate- Halloween wedding because Halloween is my favorite holiday. I also have one stepdaughter who is about to be ten years old.

The Star: Do you have any pets?
Ms Pina: Yes, I have a dog-named Zim, after the cartoon, and two cats named Leo and Lillith.

The Star: What are some of your favorite things, like color, food, movie, book, and music?
Ms. Pina: My favorite color is blue, favorite flower is the Gerber daisy, favorite food is any breakfast food, favorite book and movie is To Kill A Mockingbird, favorite show is Ugly Betty and Project Runway, favorite type of music/artist is alternative and Tori Amos. My favorite place to shop is Target because it’s the happiest place on earth and my favorite restaurant is Piedras Negras de Noche.

The Star: Did you always know you wanted to teach?
Ms Pina: I actually never really wanted to teach or teach English, but I was an English Major. Then I actually was an assistant in the Library at Antonian, and then I started teaching English there and then here I am now.

The Star: What is one of your greatest experiences?
Ms. Pina: I would have to say graduating with my Master’s for St. Mary’s because I had to put myself through school.

The Star: What words of advice or statement do you have for your students reading this interview?
Ms Pina: Writing is a process and anything can be revised.
