The week of October 8-12 was Breast Cancer Awareness Week at Incarnate Word High School in an attempt to raise awareness about the growing threat of breast cancer to women’s health and to raise money to support the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

The week consisted of the IWHS Student Council raising money for donations through the sale of pink wrist bands and pins and by hosting a $5 Denim Day. Students donated five dollars to wear a pink shirt to show their support for the cause.

On Tuesday, October 9th, Incarnate Word held a Breast Cancer Awareness Assembly. Two breast cancer survivors, who happened to be parents of students at IWHS, spoke of the effects of the disease and their struggles to overcome it.

Also, Dr. Jackie Killmer, wife of IWHS environmental science teacher Mr. Killmer, spoke of her work at the Cancer Treatment and Research Center (CTRC), and the process of creating and manufacturing medical drugs for the treatment of cancer, and future cures in the future.

Senior Alison Ayala found the assembly, “moving and informative,” and junior Veronica Ray found that she was, “awakened to the effects of breast cancer on not only people’s lives but on the community at large.”

At the assembly, the IWHS Student Council present a representative from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation with a check for $2500 as a result of the fundraising efforts of the school and the support of the students.
