Thanks to the efforts of Sister Audrey O’Mahoney, I had the amazing opportunity to communicate with Sr. Grace O’Meara, one of the eight Sisters of Charity living in Peru. Here is her experience:

“Our Incarnate Word sisters are doing very well in Peru. The devastation took place South of Lima in towns where our sisters pass through in route to the Altiplano, Huancane near Lago Titicaca on the border.”

“The epicenter in the area of Pisco left 85% of the homes and in Chincha 50% while in Ica 90% were all seriously damaged. We heard over 500 dead and many lost whole families.”

“At the time our sisters were all together in Lima and felt the tremor very forcefully while in our other mission site, Chimbote in the North it was felt but not as strong. The part that concerns us all is that businesses are ruined, schools destroyed churches damaged and many families destitute.”

“At present two of our sister nurses volunteered to work in the area for a period and help with the donations received to be sure the poor get their fair share.”

“I thank God our sisters were safe and are now able to assist the needy, that is our way to respond to Our Lord Jesus Christ suffering Who seeks relief at our hands.”

In her last line, Sister Grace is referring to the original calling of Bishop Claude-Marie Dubuis, "Our Lord Jesus Christ, suffering in the persons of a multitude of the sick and infirm of every kind, seeks relief at your hands!" These sisters are most definitely living the mission.

The Sisters of Charity extend their missions to many countries outside the United States including: Ireland, Mexico, Peru, Guatemala and Zambia.

Sister Susan Mika said, “For over 20 years I’ve travelled to Mexico trying to tell the stories of the workers and the environment and horrible social injustice there. It’s so important, as a ministry, trying to get their stories known. The same way the sisters are doing their mission in Peru, we’re trying to help these people in Mexico. We each do it in different ways, through our different ministries, and we’re all striving toward the same goal.”
