Homeless children too have dreams and hopes

On September 10, Nancy Martinez of the San Antonio Express-News, wrote an article that caught my eye. She wrote about how homeless students struggle with things we consider a “piece of cake” at home, like where they’ll sleep tomorrow or if they’ll have new clothes or school supplies.

But try to imagine walking in their shoes, how they cope with the taunts and the stabs they get from school because they live in a shelter with different people every other week and sleep on a roll-a-way bed. Try and see what they go through by changing you lifestyle now to theirs, and you’ll marvel at their courage.

But most of us don’t know or even hear about these children because of the stereotypes we see: dirty, drug addicts or alcoholics.

Without the public’s awareness of these kids, their future will become nothing, their dreams and hopes will never happen because these families won’t get the help they need in order to have the basic necessities.

There is a growing percentage of homeless people and homeless kids dropping out of school, raising the dropout percentage even more nationwide. Who will help these unfortunate families? Who will help the children in need of necessities like reading glasses or proper nutrition?

The next time you see a person hold up a sign asking for help, help them because you never know if your deeds will build another’s dream.
